Musical memories
I was listening to Desert Island Discs while doing the dishes this morning and one of the pieces of music brought instant memories.
It was the grand march from Aida. Now, I've never seen Aida, and indeed, apart from G+S, I'm not really an opera fan. So, why this particular tune?
When I was young and living in Heald Green in Cheshire, every year the local church organised the Rose Queen parade and carnival. The local scout band used to lead the parade and one of their favourite tunes was this particular march. It was only many years later than I discovered what the tune actually was. For me, it is always 'the Rose Queen march'.
The first time I ever brought
waveney home to meet my parents, we arrived at the station on the day of the Rose Queen. We walked, carrying our cases, through the village towards the church to get to our house, and as we passed the church hall, out popped Auntie May. Every village should have an Auntie May - she was one of those remarkable women who seem to be a part of everything and give so much of themselves. Among other things, she organised the Young People's Fellowship. I cannot now recall if I was ever a member, but I'd known May for most of my life.
May needed volunteers and she needed them fast. Specifically, she needed two people to carry the YPF banner in the parade. So, Richard and I dumped our suitcases in the church hall and the first time my parents ever saw my future husband, he was bearing one of the poles of the banner and I had the other one!
May never forgot any of the young people she had known. She sent me a Christmas card every year until she died and when I used to go and visit her at Xmas, her small flat was overflowing with cards from the many people who loved her.

I find I've still got Morricone's score for Once Upon a Time in the West playing in my head...
