Sitting on an alligator

I was in town today and bumped into a woman I used to work with.

She'd just come back from holiday and was full of it all.

One of the highlights was apparantly the fact that she'd sat on an alligator.

Her friend asked, "Did it try to bite you?"

"No," she said. "They tape the jaws together so that they can't bite."

If anyone reading this thinks they would do likewise when on holiday, just let me know and I'll quietly defriend you now.

I find it difficult to express how offensive I find the idea of taking pleasure in something that is so obviously distressing for the animal in question.

(I'm not opposed to all forms of animal exploitation - I'll even give you an argument in favour of moderate levels of hunting - but this is entertainment with no possible benefit to wildlife of any kind.)

I'm not against moderate levels of hunting, either, especially when a person hunts and uses the animals as food, BUT - this just annoys me.

My other question is: why would anyone WANT to do this? I mean, what's so great about sitting on an alligator? I rather look at a meadow full of wildflowers or hike to a waterfall myself, but sitting on an alligator is about number 1,150,000 in things I'd like to do in my lifetime.

*stab* Why the hell would anyone want to do that? The fact that anyone could consciously decide to do that really troubles me.

Can't we turn her into shoes?

I saw something similar at a crocodile "farm" in Singapore. They didn't tape the jaws together though, but I was fairly sure the animals were drugged.

(shakes head)

I'd rather sit on an Elephant.

In Southern Colorado there is an Alligator farm (http://colomar.com/ColoradoPlaces/alligator.html) where you can sign up for day long alligator wrestling days. Sigh...

One of the highlights was apparantly the fact that she'd sat on an alligator.

But .... Why?

What earthly enjoyment could be had, if she wanted to dance with danger acting as a living tree to a constrictor snake that's been well fed is just as dangerous and a lot less cruel. People like her make me wonder if if there might not be two species masquerading as one on our planet.

I totally do not understand what she got out of it. But I do know that I would love to handle a well-fed snake. Just to touch and feel it and let it move over me. Not necessarily a dangerous snake. I have handled pet snakes before now.

I guess it's the novelty of it, each to there own... and by that I'd like them to all go and wall themselves in somewhere where they can't do any harm.

This the same person who went on that reality show and got distressed afterwards upon seeing it?

Yes. She has some funny ideas about 'fame'.
