Thinking about Life on Mars fanfic

The fanfic bug has bitten me for the first time in quite a long while. I'm not sure if the wrists will allow me to write much, but you never know. The real catch is that my brain promptly starts to run into research problems. I was precisely two sentences into the story before I realise that I didn't know if Sam's police station is open at night and if it is who would be around.

I've already been looking a few things up - homosexuality was legal in the UK at the time of this series, which is one question answered. The one great thing about a universe set in Manchester is that I don't have to worry about the language. I grew up a short train ride from Manchester - the language, the figures of speech, they come naturally. I'm old enough to remember the seventies even if I don't remember them in any great detail.

I just know I'm going to be spending as much time looking stuff up as I am writing. But at least I'm on home turf - I can write about places that I actually know. If I want to set a murder in Manchester museum, then I can do it. My memory of the university is when my dad worked there, etc. My memory is patchy to say the least, but at least some of it is in about the right time-frame.

now all I need is a good Life on Mars icon...

If you have forgotten anything, I can fill in gaps, 40 years in Alty, only 8 miles from Mank.
