- board games:
I met
waveney at the University of East Anglia around 28 years ago and we're still together and still playing board games. They're a great socialiser, especially for people who find it easier to interact in a situation where the rules are already defined.
I like all kinds of games, silly, serious, complex, simple. Three cupboards full and still counting. - conrunning:
I've been chair of four going on five
redemption_con and now I'm chair of the bid committee for
orbital_2008. Conrunning can be very stressful at times, but it's also very rewarding. You get to work with an interesting group of people and there's nothing quite like the buzz of walking through a successful event that you've helped to organise. - editing:
I edited fanzines for about a decade until my shoulder got too painful. Now, I'm doing some professional editing, but as a combination of editing and tuition. The combination works well as I can teach a writer useful skills and dictate actual edits where necessary. I like working on complex aspects such as plot structure as well as the traditional things like point of view. - filking:
I love filking, particularly writing and performing. My biggest problem is that my voice can be very fragile and if I sing too much, it can kill the voice for a long time. I have to ration my filking, and that's depressing as I love running filk sessions. (The way to get a filk session up and running is to keep singing until enough other people appear to give it independent momentum.) - gilbert & sullivan:
My dad took me to see the D'Oyly Carte production of Iolanthe when I was a kid. I love many of the Savoy Operas. The songs also make excellent filks... - lord of the rings:
I remember borrowing the books at school. Read the first volume on day one, reading on the bus and everywhere else. Volume two on day two, etc. Still one of my most re-read books, though I probably haven't tackled it in the last decade as reading isn't as easy physically as it used to be. - psychology:
Got interested after doing it as an evening class. Did the GCSE the year after, but got politely told by the teacher to go away and do the A-level as I was scaring the other students. After that, I did a unit with the Open University, but haven't followed up on it as we got skint about the time I would have done the next unit. These days, I'm more into the Earth sciences, but I might go back to it some day. - settlers of catan:
Still one of the best board games of all time. Plays out in an hour; never know to provoke player arguments; good social game due to the need to trade. Happy blend of luck and skill. When you win, it was your skill; when you lose, the dice were against you! - tarot:
I got interested in Tarot after working for a year in a New Age gift shop in Poole. Given my other interests, my approach to Tarot is based a lot on psychology. - zz9:
I've always been a fan of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I remember listening to it at meetings of the Games Society at University. At Concussion a couple of years ago, I met the fan club who had a stand at the convention. I joined up and met a great bunch of people.
