A good start to the New Year

I sat down today and managed to complete the rest of my Open University coursework for the 'Life in the Oceans' short course. The section on fish farming turned out to be a lot easier than I expected.

I'm pleased to have that out of the way on the first day of the new year.

For those who are interested, it makes much better environmental sense to farm herbivorous species like carp then carnivores like tuna and salmon. The wild fish that have to be cauught to feed them would provide five times as much protein if eaten directly.

Now, I have to decide if I'm going to do another course. I'm currently looking at several options ranging from A-level chemistry to Open University oceanography. Or possibly nothing at all, if the tax bill turns out too high and the car needs replacing...

I enjoy study - it keeps the mind agile.

Mind you, that's if protein is the only thing you're considering. Tuna and salmon are high-fat fish and important sources of omega oils (which are difficult for humans to get enough of without eating fish). Carp are not.

But the fish fed to the tuna, such as sardines are also high in omega oils.

Eat sardines, not tuna. Likewise herring which might be used as feedstock for salmon. Herring are omega-rich as well.

If you want a vegetarian souce of omega fatty acids, get a supply of linseed seeds (any health food shop will stock them). If they're uncracked (the kind I prefer), soak them and put them in a been sprouter overnight and eat them for breakfast. Voila! Cheap and easy omega oils.

and the car needs replacing

I ended up having to replace our trusty Citroen after some lout decided to customize it with his car... (ours was parked at the time!)

Got two (top end when made) Renaults of about the same age for the insurance payment off ebay! (There are some good deals in cars there!)
