Ponds and other ramblings

Had a generally constructive day. The plants for our new wildlife pond arrived so I spent part of the day in the garden watching Richard plant them out. In our pond at least, this involves making bags of hessian filled with soil, putting the plant in and dropping the bag in the pond. This technique has several uses. The plant can extend its roots outside the bag over time, and the bag stops the soil escaping into the deeper parts of the pond.

Richard and Henry are making Lego machines. I set them a challenge a few days ago (after they'd been watching a rather dull episode of Scrapheap Challenge) to make a Lego machine that could pick up a collection of scattered dice and place them in a box. The results are almost ready and are pretty impressive.

We have a vast Lego collection built up from all sorts of kits and second-hand bits and it includes both pneumatic and technical stuff.

Gave a last chemistry lesson to one of my pupils (I do private math tuition and was asked to add chemistry for one of my pupils). She's become one of my favourites. Not a genius by any length, but when you can start with someone who hates a subject and really create some genuine enthusiasm, it's a real pleasure for a teacher. I shall miss her once the GCSEs are over.

Also spent the evening selling programmes at the Folk Festival and then dancing at the celiidh. (It doesn't take away the pain, but it does help me cope. Distraction is the name of the game.)
