Causes of rape?

Too dizzy to post much today, but it's worth pointing out this entry on Ben Goldacre's blog as it's dealing with a particularly bad mis-representation of some (unpublished, so people can't even look at the original work) research regarding rape.

The example of poor journalism rings all too true. On more than one occasion and with multiple newspapers I've seen and been the "victim" of similar (though on completely different topics) misrepresentation. All too frequently newspapers print what they want to print regardless of the facts.

To cite a few examples, the Sunday Times has completely inverted pretty much every statement made. The Daily Express has attributed quotes when their journalist hadn't even managed to make contact and had only left a message on our answering machine! The Daily Mail did manage to speak with me, but seemingly failed to understand what was said. And there are others.

Even the BBC isn't immune. The poorest television journalist that I've witnessed has been conducted by the Beeb, and not on just one occasion either. I've you're going to be interviewed for British TV go with either Granada or Carlton (I have no experience of C4, Five, or Sky).

I had one very good experience with the BBC. They made a short documentary about 8 or 9 years ago and got it completely right. (and I knew I was lucky - I took a gamble on the interviewer who seemed to have a genuine interest)

Good on Ben yet again. It's stunning how the human mind will run through general data to find enough to conform to their own biases and then spin that data into supporting reasons for those biases.

Bad science indeed.
