Watching Buffy

I'm down with a throat infection of some kind.  Mildly annoying: slightly dizzy, sore throat, difficulty talking, but no major symptoms.

However, being a bit too wobbly to do what I really want to do, I'm sitting down and rewatching Buffy.

Some of it stands up very well.   This time around, I find I'm appreciating Xander and Cordelia a lot more.  Xander is far better looking than I recalled (why on Earth did I ever think Angel was the bee's knees?), and Cordy is a wonderful character whose chemistry with Xander leaves Buffy and Angel standing.

(My favourite Cordelia moment is still the one in 'Slayerfest' where she has no weapon at all and bluffs a vampire into running away from her.)

I'm looking forward to Westley reappearing as I carry on forwards.  I hated him originally, but really got to like him in 'Angel' and I'm now wondering if that will change my opinion of him in 'Buffy'.

I always find it annoying when you have a "comedy side-kick" style character that is almost constantly portrayed as ineffective/ stupid/ a liability etc which is how both Xander and Wesley were shown for a lot of the time.

Yes, eventually both get to change, however it does tend to grate a bit.

Ok, we do sometimes see a bit of another side of them (eg Xander in the episode "The Zeppo") but IMO there could have easily been more of this.

I never got what was so cool about Angel; he didn't strike me as at all handsome (other than being buff--his face looked rather ugly to me).

And, yes, Xander and Cordelia were underappreciated, I think.

One thing that's struck me about rewatching Buffy in the past is that Buffy is always very clear (as is the program itself) that she's not the sharpest stake in the bundle. She's not a brainiac, or even particularly good at schoolwork, and she's conscious of it. She's attractive and somewhat athletic, but she's a star mostly to the viewer, not really to her classmates or her teachers.

Hope your throat feels better soon!

Cordelia rocks. And that particular moment when she bluffs off that vampire is just absolutely awesome.

I am, however in the "Angel is gorgeous" camp. But then, I feel the same way about Drusilla. Does this mean I have a vampire fetish? Hmmm...

Spike is the best. I love what he does at the end of the Musical episode both for Buffy and also his reaction to everyone's cheery singing ( not putting any spoilers here just in case, only teasers :-))
