Gareth Thomas in' Volpone'

Gareth Thomas is appearing in 'Volpone' at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester. It's not one of the lead parts, but Gareth nearly always puts in a good performance on stage. As a rule of thumb, the harder the part, the more he seem
s to do with it. The only poor one I recollect was where the part was so bland (the 'nice neighbour') that there wasn't really much he could do with it other than be nice and neighbourly. Anything historical with old-fashioned language
usually pulls a good performance as you have to work hard as an actor to make the language work for a modern audience.

The theatre itself is an interesting one. The Royal Exchange is an attractive period building, but the theatre itself was built *inside* the Exchange hall and is a theatre in the round with a strong external resemblence to a lunar module
.
It's a fascinating contrast of old and new.

The play runs from 20 Oct to 27 November. If anyone wants a flyer, please me know the address to send it to.

Ah yes, I remember that theatre - Harriet took me to have a look at the lunar module sitting in the middle of the Exchange Hall, and then we realised that they were doing Taming of the Shrew that evening - so we bought tickets. :-)

I saw their production of The Taming of the Shrew too. Loved the costumes.

I'm rather fond of the Royal Exchange. The lunar module likeness is probably a better way of describing it than 'the robot spider' which is how I tend to think of it.

My dad refuses to see plays there, however, because he hates theatre in the round.

Are you likely to be coming up for it???

I would have done, but my parents are visiting David at half term, and that's really the only practical time to go.
