wax cylinders

Most of the stuff we agent is fanzines, but there's a few oddities in there and one of them is wax cylinders.  (someone ordered half a dozen this morning)

I just love the way the technology operates.  An emailed file can be recorded onto a wax cylinder.  The really old meets the really new.  (You can even get special calibration cylinders to measure things like wow and flutter.

(I'm assuming that people already know that wax cylinder players - phonographs -  were the technology before record players)

Phonographs? Cylinders? Some of us remember when you just had to /be/ there... you know, when the village singer had nothing but a rough cone of parchment to bellow through. Every night. And all that.

Someone who is a better writer than me could write a novel or short story based on that, centered around Jack Seward of Dracula.

I guess it must mean that I'm genuinely aging since I remember my grandparents' box full of cylinders and their Victrola. They also had a later gramophone with big thick records. A lot of old bluegrass and Jolsen. I remember listening to them in rapt fascination (I was a strange child).
