current reading

The Frogs by Aristophanes. I started this a couple of months ago and was getting nowhere, but it's making much better sense after Tony Keen's talk on Greek theatre at Novacon and I'm getting far more out of it as a result. (Even 2000 years ago, people were complaining that young people weren't getting enough exercise and weren't as partiotic as their parents and that moral standards were in decline and the media was responsible...)

I'm also enjoying 'The Power of Three'. Thanks to those on my flist who kept recommending Diane Wynne Jones to me.

I love The Frogs - we have this hilarious version translated into the New York vernacular.

The translation I am using is old and not terribly good and it is bowdlerised as well.

Ah. Is that the terribly literal and not a bit funny Penguin version?

I'm trying to remember how [livejournal.com profile] inamac and I discovered how much we loved Aristophenes. It may have been a BBC radio version of one of his plays. (I seem to remember a sort of sampler play with an overarching plot about old Harris-toffee-knees himself, which may be confusing me.) We have several versions of The Frogs which is probably our favourite.

I do not know where it comes from (the book is an old library hardback), but he feels the need to put f*** for fart.
