Serendipity
While working on the history of Colonel John MacDonell, I discovered his second
in a duel was a Mr Cameron. Naturally, I included the duel in my plot, and,
never loath to waste a good character (and because the economic requirements of
writing for radio demand that you don't use more characters than you need), I
proceeded to draft Mr Cameron into the York Volunteers and gave him the first
name of Duncan as it sounded suitably Scottish. The aim being to give MacDonell
a close friend to talk to when necessary.
Today, while researching the fine detail of the battle of Queenston Heights, who
do I discover heroically retrieving MacDonell's body? Captain Duncan Cameron of
the York Volunteers!
Yay!
