more nest box

In this wet weather, my poor bedraggled blue tit is looking even more bedraggled than ever. This tiny slip of a bird and his/her partner are still working hard all hours of the day. I only have to stand by my front window for a minute or two before one of them appears.

The youngsters must be growing well - their voices are getting louder.

I just saw one of the great tits as well, his/her head peeking out of the box for a minute or two, just taking a look at the scenery. They must be sitting on eggs. I don't know if it's the same parent all the time or whether they're taking it in turns, but I'm guessing on shifts as I don't think any food is being brought to the parent sitting on the eggs.

They seem to have mostly settled on using different entrances. The blue tits use the far entrance about 70% of the time and the great tits mainly use the middle entrance, but they swop over sometimes. None of them use the hole on the left, possibly because it's both closest to the house and also further from where they usually fly in with food.

Blue tits make great use of caterpillars from oak trees - they actually time their broods to match in with the peak supply, so I expect they're visiting the oak just around the corner for a lot of the food.
