Gardening is good for you

I was feeling very down this morning (mostly worrying about [livejournal.com profile] scarlatti who is seriously unwell http://dougs.livejournal.com/536136.html although the garden vandal isn't exactly helping)

[livejournal.com profile] kerravonsen and [livejournal.com profile] grumpoldusenaut kindly phoned to keep me company and I went out for a walk and tidied the lounge, but the thing that did me the most good was chatting to my new neighbours while I was working in the front garden. They've only been there a month or so and this was the first time I'd really got to chat to them beyond just saying hello. I offered to give them a hand with their garden which was looking pretty sorry (the house had been empty for several months before they moved in). They've never lived anywhere with a garden before, so I ended up helping them clear the bed at the front, lending them a set of garden tools and showing them what was plant and what was weed in the front border.

We've rescued what I know to be a very nice fuchsia and found several young giant poppies (they seeded over from my garden) and removed a large number of dandelions and buttercups and other weeds. We left the clump of daisies - they were looking pretty and weren't trying to take over.

THey seem like nice people and it was great to be out there garding, being able to help someone, encourage the neighbours to learn a bit of gardening and just chat about things that had nothing whatsoever to do with anything stressful.

I'm feeling a lot more relaxed now.
