5 questions meme

01. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
02. I will respond by asking you five questions of a very intimate and creepily personal nature. Or not so creepy/personal.
03. Update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
04. Include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the post.
05. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions

[livejournal.com profile] vatoengland asked me:
1.I have never asked you this before – and I am curious: why do you like water voles? I have to admit that I know nothing about them, except that they are cute little creatures. :-)
2.Is there a fictional character (TV, movies, literature) that you relate to on a personal level? By the way, I almost wrote "frictional character". Ahem.
3.Other than maths, are there any other subjects you tutor?
4.Are there any interests you and your husband don't have in common?
5.Is there a song in particular that brings back wonderful memories for you? If so, what is it?

I like them because they're small and cute, but the main reason I picked one for an LJ ID was to allow me to occasionally mention that they're our fastest declining native species. I've always been interested in conservation, but more so in recent years owing to getting more connected with the Wildlife Trusts.

The causes of water vole decline are ones that can be tackled. Trapping mink can make a big difference - they can eliminate water voles from whole stretches of rivers. (where otter are returning, as they are now in many areas, this can be good for water voles as otters often push out the mink)

Another problem facing voles is that they are occasionally mistaken for rats and poisoned. It's a bit tough when you're a harmless, non-disease-carrying vegetarian. If you want to know how to tell a rat from a water vole, see the link below (also contains seriously cule vole picture).

2. A fictional character that I relate to on a personal level?

When I'm writing fan fic, it's whichever one I'm writing about. If I couldn't relate to them, I don't think I could write them well. I occasionally manage to 'channel' a character to get me through a real-life situation. I remember many years ago getting past the pain of an appendix operation by channeling Spock and treating fear of pain as illogical. Other characters have helped in other ways since then.

3. I occasionally tutor English and Science. I prefer not to do English as I don't think teaching it by imparting grammar is actually effective. It's better to use it and learn from one's mistakes. I'm doing one girl for statistics now. It's a good thing I pick up statistics very fast (partly from the statistics in my Open University psychology course) as her syllabus occasionally throws up something I don't know. Luckily, I can normally fathom it in a few mins with the aid of her text book and then teach her what she is unable to learn from that same book. When it comes to stats, I tend to find it very easy to understand *why* something is done - and she has big problems in that area. I guess it helps that I've actually used them in real life.

4. Yes. My interest in recreational mathematics is limited. He has no interest in SF (though he does get on very well with fans and occasionally goes to a convention). He isn't into BDSM either. He's not much into folk music, though he's willing to go to the occasional folk festival and has helped Wimborne Folk Festival as a collector for many years (and he's very very good at it). We have a big overlap of interests when it comes to gaming and wildlife and gardening.

5. No songs that bring back wonderful memories, but many that I associate with particular people and places. I always joke that it's a good thing Richard doesn't have a memory for folk songs as if he did, he'd know which towns I was going for in 'Ticket to Ride' by the songs I'm humming as I play.

I've often found that the song 'The Mary Ellen Carter' by Stan Rogers can motivate me to do things when I'm feeling down.

When I was in Winchester last July with [livejournal.com profile] swisstone & [livejournal.com profile] childeric and the gang, we spent a few minutes watching what we think was a water vole near the waterline on the opposite bank of the river Itchen, just downstream of the High Street bridge.

We might see if it, or its heirs and successors, are still there when I'm there with ZZ9 in a couple of weeks. It'll give us a chance to confirm its identity.

Interview me if you like but I shan't do it back (I've posted this too often in the past as it is) and shall reply here, lol.

Do you believe in astrology? (or numerology, palmistry, etc.)

Do you see yourself as having children and if so, how many?

What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?

How close do you get to the recommened 5 portions of fruit and veg per day?

If you were invited to join the following student societies at Oxford, which ones would you be most likely to join? Punting, debating, gaming, conservation (clearing scrub, etc), rambling, hockey, netball, cross-country, languages (visiting with native speakers), a political party (name which ones),

1. How important is poetry in your life and where do you think the interest origianated?

2. What are your views on education?

3. If you had to choose between going to the latest Harry Potter movie and to King Lear, which would you choose? (Assume that friends of your choice accompany you to either and that both are easy to get to)

4. How do you feel about conservation?

5. Do you try and reduce the amount of CO2 your household produces? If not, why not?
