Server problems

We've got a bad Denial of Service attack on our server at the moment. Richard's working on it, but it may take a while.

What do people get out of doing these things?

Richard thinks it may be some kind of Halloween 'fun'.

We're not getting any fun this evening.

Looks like we're not the only ones affected. Other people have been attacked as well, though we don't know how widespread it is.

D'oh. We've had our own kind of halloween fun, kids who are far to old to be trick or treating, and young ones who look a little dissapointed when they get a very small chocolate bar, and an apple. We were surprised by the group of six who were very pleased with the apples, there is hope yet!

I have no idea why people do these things. I can only assume it equates with the thrill of, at one extreme, ringing a doorbell and running away, and at the other, joyriding in a stolen car.

It wouldn't be quite so bad if it were always technically-minded idiots; you could at least hope they'd grow out of it before any serious damage was done. What bothers me are the people who produce tools for doing this, so that you *don't* have to have a clue.

Several of my trick or treaters looked happy to choose apples instead of Mars bars. I was impressed. Some were a bit greedy though.

I *did* answer my door with my large super soaker though just to be sure.
